Jamestown Funeral Home Owner Indicted on 52 Charges, Including Fraud and Abuse of a Corpse

Chadrick “Chad” Mundy, owner of Mundy Funeral Home in Jamestown, has been indicted on 52 criminal counts following a months‑long investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

What Happened

A Fentress County grand jury returned a sweeping indictment against Mundy after TBI agents uncovered evidence of fraudulent insurance claims, financial exploitation of elderly clients, and mishandling of cremated remains. The investigation began in May after state officials received multiple allegations involving Mundy Funeral Home.

Mundy, 37, was arrested Wednesday afternoon and booked into the Fentress County Jail on an $80,000 bond.

Charges Filed

According to the TBI, Mundy faces the following charges:

  • 15 counts – Theft of property over $2,500

  • 12 counts – Fraudulent insurance act

  • 9 counts – Financial exploitation of an elderly or vulnerable adult

  • 5 counts – Theft of property over $1,000

  • 4 counts – Theft of property under $1,000

  • 4 counts – Abuse of a corpse

  • 2 counts – Criminal simulation

  • 1 count – Worthless checks

Why It Matters for Fentress County

Investigators say Mundy submitted fraudulent burial insurance claims, including claims for people who were still alive — one allegedly involving his own wife. They also found that prepaid funeral funds were mishandled and that cremated remains were not properly managed, including one case where ashes reportedly sat uncollected for more than 50 days.

These findings raise serious concerns about consumer protection, elder safety, and trust in local funeral services.

Background: Licenses Suspended

In August, the Tennessee Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers temporarily suspended both Mundy’s license and the funeral home’s license after auditors discovered missing death certificates, absent insurance documentation, and multiple questionable death claims. Homesteaders Life Company confirmed that several claims were filed for individuals who were still living.

What’s Next

Mundy is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. The case will proceed through the Fentress County judicial system as investigators continue reviewing financial records, insurance filings, and client documentation.
